There is more in the scriptures about King David than any other person except Christ.

1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, and 1 Chronicles are almost entirely about David.

David wrote 80-100 of the Psalms

The Holy Spirit inspired the scriptures and obviously wanted to say many, many things to us through the life of David.

And the first words from the Lord about David reveal to us who it is that the Lord wants to steward His kingdom:
1 Samuel 13:14 (ESV)
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

The Kingly heart that the Lord is looking for to exercise His authority is one that is “after God’s heart”.

He clearly wants “a man/woman after His own heart”.

The New Testament will reaffirm this about David:
Acts 13:22 (ESV)
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to  be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the  son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’

What is the primary focus of a man/woman after God’s own heart?

Psalm 27:1-4 (ESV)
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

David was a multi-tasking man of many things: shepherd, musician,  deliverance ministry, General of an army, song writer, prophet, husband,  father, and King of a nation - yet he was a man of One Thing!

David failed in many ways: lying, manipulation, fear, adultery, and murder - yet, he was a man of One Thing!

David prayed many prayers: provision, protection, wisdom, forgiveness, etc. - but he was a man of One Thing!

What was the One Thing?

It was an intentional prayer life for and practical seeking to dwell in  God’s house/presence in order to gaze upon His beauty and inquire of His  wisdom.

This is the most practical and important thing about the Man after God’s own heart.

Psalm 27:4 (ESV)
4 One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

What is the beauty of the Lord:
1. His attributes: love, grace, goodness, mercy, wisdom, and a thousand other things
2. His ways: miracles, nature, breakthroughs, etc.
3. His throne room: Revelation 4, Ezekiel 1, Daniel 7, Isaiah 6
4. His Son Jesus
5. His Holy Spirit
6. His Word
7. His people
